Purpose: Parental involvement in education is widely recognized as a critical factor influencing children's academic success. This qualitative study seeks to explore the varied aspects of parental engagement and understand its direct and indirect effects on student outcomes. The objective is to delineate how different forms of involvement contribute to academic achievement and to identify the barriers that parents face in engaging with their children's educational processes. Methodology: The study employed a qualitative methodology, focusing exclusively on semi-structured interviews to gather comprehensive data from 24 participants, including parents, students, and teachers. The interviews aimed at achieving theoretical saturation and were analyzed using NVivo software to facilitate a thorough thematic analysis. The participant selection was purposive, ensuring a diverse demographic representation to capture a wide range of experiences and insights. Findings: Three main themes were identified from the analysis: Types of Parental Involvement, Impact of Involvement on Student Outcomes, and Barriers to Parental Involvement. Under these themes, multiple categories were explored, such as Emotional Support, Academic Assistance, and Financial Support, which significantly enhanced academic performance and student well-being. Barriers identified included work and time constraints, economic factors, and cultural attitudes, which hindered effective parental engagement. Conclusion: The study underscores the significant positive effects of diverse types of parental involvement on students' academic outcomes and emotional well-being. It also highlights several socio-economic and cultural barriers that can restrict parental engagement. Addressing these barriers is crucial for facilitating more effective parental involvement, which is essential for optimizing student achievement.

Background: Media content plays a significant role in shaping behaviors, attitudes, and lifestyle choices, especially among children, a demographic that is highly impressionable and actively engaged with various media platforms.Aims: This article explores the role of media literacy in equipping children to critically evaluate media content that promotes unhealthy lifestyles, including poor dietary choices, sedentary behavior, celebrity worship and unrealistic body ideals.Methodology: This study employs a qualitative approach, synthesizing data from case studies, government reports, and peer-reviewed academic literature to explore the role of media literacy in fostering healthy lifestyle choices among children.Findings: The findings indicate that current media literacy education programs for children are insufficient, largely because they often fail to include parental education. Parents play a pivotal role as mediators of children’s media consumption, and their active participation in media literacy education strengthens the impact of such interventions. The article argues for an integrated media literacy curriculum targeting both children and parents to create a more comprehensive understanding of healthy lifestyle practices and critical media engagement. Recommendations for policy, educational frameworks, and family-centered interventions are proposed to address these gaps. Conclusions: We emphasize the importance of a holistic approach to media literacy that includes all involved people and bodies in promoting healthier lifestyle choices among children.

Given the link between parental involvement and children’s academic outcomes, the current research set out to redress the imbalance created by the almost nonexistence of research evidence on the impacts of simultaneous presence of mothers beside their children in an EFL class. To this end, following a mixed-method approach (a quasi-experimental design and semi-structured interviews), 35 starter-level female children, aged 4-6, selected via convenience sampling were randomly assigned into an experimental group (N=18) in which mothers attended the class with their children, and a control group (N= 17) in which mothers did not. Findings unraveled that mothers’ in-class presence enhanced children’s English language vocabulary, increased their class attendance, provided a feeling of affection and safety to help them relax and get motivated, caused their in-class behaviors to be closely monitored, and created rapport and solidarity between home and school. Mothers’ in-class presence also provided a unique opportunity for mothers to co-teach with the teacher the new vocabularies to their children. The findings also suggested that teaching English to mothers prior to their children’s course of instruction assisted them in scaffolding their children in classes. The implication is that as a result of their ongoing in-class presence, mothers may become more vigilant influential agents in educational meetings and school board decision-makings. Also, stakeholders need to be encouraged to devise plans allowing them to harness more efficiently the positive impacts of mothers’ in-class presence and provoke parents’ active participation in classrooms.

This study aimed to examine the mediating role of executive functioning in the relationship between parental involvement and math achievement among children with learning disabilities. A descriptive correlational research design was employed, involving 379 Malaysian parents of children aged 9 to 12 years diagnosed with learning disabilities. Participants were selected using stratified random sampling based on the Morgan and Krejcie (1970) sample size determination table. Data were collected using three validated instruments: the Parent and School Survey (PASS) to assess parental involvement, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) to measure children's executive functioning, and the Math Composite of the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test–Third Edition (WIAT-III) for math achievement. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted using SPSS version 27, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed using AMOS version 21 to test the hypothesized mediation model and assess the model fit. Pearson correlation results indicated significant positive relationships among all variables: parental involvement and executive functioning (r = .41, p < .001), parental involvement and math achievement (r = .36, p < .001), and executive functioning and math achievement (r = .48, p < .001). The SEM revealed an acceptable model fit (χ²/df = 1.84, CFI = 0.97, RMSEA = 0.045), and confirmed that executive functioning significantly mediated the effect of parental involvement on math achievement. Both the direct effect (β = 0.26, p < .01) and the indirect effect through executive functioning (β = 0.18, p < .001) were statistically significant. The findings underscore the importance of executive functioning as a cognitive mechanism through which parental involvement enhances mathematical performance in children with learning disabilities. Educational interventions should integrate strategies to strengthen both parental engagement and children’s executive functioning skills to optimize academic outcomes.
